Our Mission & History

Building Character and Confidence Since 1953

Every summer, hundreds of campers and families come to Camp Jorn YMCA to connect with nature, discover new skills, and form lifelong friendships. What began in 1953 on the shores of Rest Lake has grown into a community that continues to nurture character, confidence, and connection — generation after generation.

Camp Jorn isn’t just a place; it’s a shared experience built on tradition, inclusion, and joy. Whether campers are paddling across the lake, learning teamwork at the archery range, or singing by the campfire, they’re growing in ways that last far beyond the summer.

Our Mission

Building character, confidence, and community through enriching outdoor experiences.

As part of the YMCA movement, Camp Jorn is dedicated to creating experiences that help youth, families, and communities grow stronger — in spirit, mind, and body.

We believe every child deserves the opportunity to:

  • Experience nature in a safe and supportive environment

  • Discover their unique potential through exploration and play

  • Develop life skills that inspire confidence and leadership

These principles guide every program, from Resident and Day Camps to Family Camp and beyond.

Our Values

Every activity at Camp Jorn is shaped by the four core values of the YMCA:

  • Caring – Showing kindness and compassion toward others.

  • Honesty – Acting with integrity and fairness.

  • Respect – Valuing ourselves, others, and the natural world.

  • Responsibility – Taking ownership of our actions and community.

These values are the foundation of the Camp Jorn experience — helping each camper grow into their best self.

Our History

A Legacy of Growth and Connection

In 1952, the Lake County Family YMCA purchased the land that would become Camp Jorn. Just one year later, in the summer of 1953, the first campers arrived — beginning a tradition that continues today.

For more than 70 years, Camp Jorn has welcomed campers from Wisconsin, Illinois, and across the country. In 2007, the camp officially became an independent YMCA, marking a new chapter while honoring the spirit of its founders.

Throughout the decades, Camp Jorn has grown in size and scope — adding cabins, lodges, and modern facilities — yet the essence remains unchanged: a place where young people build confidence, form lasting friendships, and experience the magic of the Northwoods.

Looking Ahead

As Camp Jorn continues to evolve, our mission stays the same — to ensure every child and family has access to the life-changing power of camp.
Each summer, we renew our commitment to providing the best programs, staff, and facilities possible, so campers can keep discovering who they are and what they’re capable of.
