The property on which Camp Jorn is located has a very colorful history.
The original buildings were erected for Charles Nash from 1920 through 1923. He used the property as a private hunting and vacation resort.
After World War II, the camp was purchased by the Dengel Family, who developed it as a private boys camp named Camp Thunderbolt. During this time, Dwight D. Eisenhower visited the camp!
The property was purchased by the Lake County Family YMCA in 1952. One half of the purchase price was received from the estate of the late Albrecht Jorn. The other half of the purchase price was financed by the YMCA. Much of the credit for the establishment of Camp Jorn goes to Attorney Gerald Snyder, whose untiring efforts resulted in obtaining the money for the purchase and establishment of a Reserve Fund for Camp Jorn from Mr. Jorn's estate.
On August 30, 2007, Camp Jorn purchased it's title from the Lake County Family YMCA and became an Independent YMCA Camp!
Camp Jorn has been serving children from IL, WI and other areas throughout the country and across the globe since 1953!
